Health & Safety at Work etc. ACT 1974 Part 1 Group Policy Statement It is the Company's policy to continue to increase the safety of all employees. The promotion of safety and health measures is regarded as a mutual objective of management and employees at all levels. The Company will take all reasonable practicable steps to prevent personal injury and damage to property, and to protect everyone from foreseeable work hazards, including the public insofar as they come into contact with the Company and its products. The Company has always been concerned to ensure high standards of safety and it is the Company's policy to maintain and improve these standards wherever possible. Part 2 Organisation and arrangements for ASCOL - Academic Sciences Company The Chairman/Managing Directors will have the overall responsibility for safety which will include the following: Ensuring that competent staff, adequate materials and safe plant are available to meet the needs of safety and health at all times. Product Safety. The Company Secretary will: Ensure that an effective safety policy is in force and that it is periodically appraised and any necessary changes are made. Ensure that accidents are reported to the appropriate authority and that records are kept. The Group Safety Adviser will: Make regular visits to inspect and report on safety matters. Provide a safety advice, including advising on and should be consulted on the installation of new plant, etc. Ensure that the Chairman and others are kept informed of new legislation, codes of practice etc. Advise on safety training requirements. The Departmental Managers will be responsible for: Laying down safe systems of work, providing a safe place of work and the necessary supervision, instruction and training Investigating accidents to discover the causes in order to prevent re-occurrences. Ensuring that statutory tests and examinations are carried out to plant and that up-to-date certificates are available. Providing adequate supplies of personal safety equipment (to British Standards). Providing adequate fire fighting equipment. Ensuring that adequate first aid facilities are available. Ensuring that statutory registers are kept and maintained. Ensuring that adequate safety representation is possible through the Company Safety Committee. The Work etc. Act 1974 The Works Managers will be responsible for: Ensuring that the safe system of work laid down is in operation. Ensuring that all persons under their charge are adequately trained and are fully aware of any known hazards. Ensuring that all employees know what to do in case of fire and know the location of and how to use fire fighting equipment. Ensuring that all employees know the whereabouts of first aid facilities. Ensuring that adequate supervision is available in particular where young or inexperienced workers are concerned. Ensuring that work necessary for safety and health is carried out promptly. Ensuring that serious consideration is given to any representation about safety and health from employees. Ensuring that adequate supplies of personal safety equipment are available. Ensuring that good housekeeping standards are maintained at all times. Ensuring that sub-contractors prior to commencement of work provide particulars of the safe method of work to be used, and are made aware of any particular safety requirements in the area in which they will be working. Ensuring that visitors are supervised and provided with any necessary personal safety equipment. Ensuring that assessments are carried out of any hazardous substances to be used and that the necessary precautions are taken. Works Supervisors will be responsible for: Ensuring that all employees in their working areas carry out the safe system of work laid down. Ensuring that plant and machinery is only used when the appropriate safety devices are fitted or working. Ensuring that defects are reported to the Works Manager/ Erection Manager, whichever is appropriate. Ensuring that a daily housekeeping inspection is carried out of working areas and that general tidiness, lighting, guards and other safety arrangements are in order. Ensuring that lifting appliances and tackle are checked before use and supervising lifting operations. Ensuring that personal safety equipment is worn. Ensuring that ladders and scaffold are checked daily where they are in use and that they are in safe working order. Duties of Employees: To take reasonable care to ensure that they do not endanger themselves or anyone else. Not to misuse anything provided in the interest of safety and health. To co-operate with their employer and others in carrying out statutory requirements. To bring to the attention of their supervisor or safety representative anything which may lead to accident or injury. Failure to comply with the Company Safety Policy could lead to disciplinary procedure as laid down. |
